Charlotte Poulos

Charlotte Poulos was born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana. She attended Indiana University where she studied Fine Arts. Her subject matter is the nature that surrounds us: lakes and rivers, water lilies, fields, and mountains. She was influenced by many cultures and art movements but it was her friend and mentor Harriett Rex Smith, the Ashland landscape artist, who made the biggest impact on her work. Charlotte is interested in depicting the feeling evoked by a landscape rather than creating a faithful reproduction. In her process, the season, time of day, the sky, weather, and textures play a crucial role. Her primary medium is watercolor, though she occasionally uses mixed media, including oil pastels, colored pencils, charcoal, inks, and collage. She prefers watercolor for its fluidity, portability, lightness, and unpredictable quality, which lends itself to experimentation. According to Charlotte, the best moments of creativity come when the joy for discovery combines with technical skills and knowledge.
